Just 5 hours ago the death toll reached 271!
The Daily Star reports that an alleged 'criminal' was killed in a 'shootout' between Rapid Action Battalion members and his cohorts in the city's Mohammadpur area early Wednesday. The dead was identified as Shamsher Mobin alias Shimul, 33, a resident of Kamrangirchar area in the capital. He was accused in eight cases, including one for murder, police said.
According to the police, a patrol team of Rab-2 raided a field at Dhaka Udyan in Mohammadpur at about 1:00am where Shimul and his associates were holding a meeting. Sensing their presence, the gang opened fire on the elite force members forcing them to fire back that triggered a 'gunfight'. At one stage, the criminals managed to flee the scene. Later, the Rab men found the bullet-hit body of Shimul on the field.
The elite force members recovered a firearm and some bullets from the spot. The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Same press release, same news! Only the numbers in death toll rises to 271 during the Awami League led government. Rights watch group says 11 people were killed in October 2010.
